While education is the surest way to break the cycle of generational poverty, mastering academics is just one facet of truly readying a child for the world – Harlem Children’s Zone.

Equity in education means that personal or social circumstances such as gender, ethnic origin or family background, are not obstacles to achieving educational potential (definition of fairness) and that all individuals reach at least a basic minimum level of skills (definition of inclusion).

To achieve equity in education, all the factors that affect the child’s ability to learn need to addressed. Education takes second place of lower, if a child is hungry, scared or tired.

Hence we address the issues affecting children, giving them greater support and resources to enable them to learn and achieve education goals, to break that generational cycle, so many children experience.

A consequence of not having an equitable society, is many get left behind, and do not reach their potential, which has a personal and a social cost. This is what creates disadvantaged areas which have higher unemployment, higher social housing and higher crime rates.

Equity in education will allow for higher educational attainment, which is the way to break generational poverty and allow children, families and community to live to their positive potential.

St Ultans through its wraparound service helps to create a more equitable system for the child, family and community.
